No photos please, no photos. I know what you’re going to ask and yes, it’s me - the Abyssinian Cat. Those drawings and statues found in the pyramid, are of me. Ok, so it’s not actually me, that would make me super old but it is my great great great great great, no wait a moment, great great great great great great great, no that’s not it either, it’s my great,....Oh forget it I don’t have enough claws to count it on. I’m a direct descendant from those kitty cats worshipped by the ancient Egyptians.
First things first
Before you get carried away and start falling in love with Abyssinians let me clear one thing up our breed originates from Egypt. EGYPT. E-GYPT. Or maybe India? Definitely via Britain though. Not Ethiopia, I have absolutely no idea why we are named after the Ethiopian Empire, we just are. It’s like having a ridiculous surname - you’re stuck with it, just like we’re stuck with Abyssinian.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
There’s enough competition in the feline world for the title of Glamour Puss without us throwing our collars into the ring. We know we can’t compete with long haired cat breeds but think of them as the overtly sexy Marilyn Monroe of the cat world and Abyssinians, with our long, lean, sleek bodies, big beautiful eyes and fabulous fur, as a more striking beauty like Audrey Hepburn.
Life’s a party
Don’t be fooled by those ancient portraits of the Abyssinian Cat. We are a cat breed that hates to sit still for too long, we’d much rather be playing! I’m not actually sure how my ancestors sat still long enough for someone to paint them. I couldn’t do it, I’d much rather be playing, playing with you actually and making you see how fun life can be.
I’ve spoken to my fellow Abyssinians and none of us can understand why you humans are so stressed all the time. You have so many fun things to play with. You can literally make a game out of anything, like tying your shoelaces! You get to play with laces every day! Oh and making the bed, do you actually realise how awesome it is to dive in and out of a squishy duvet? Don’t get us wrong, we like toys too, anything that challenges us is great.
You’ll never be alone
You seem like a nice kind of human so I’m going to let you into a little secret. I’m actually really shy, all Abyssinians are. Don’t get me wrong once I’ve had the chance to get to know you I’m a hoot, a real hoot. I’m playful, lively, affectionate and really easy to get on with. Like seriously, I can get on with anyone, dogs, cats, birds, you name it...although I’m not a huge fan of children.
Some cat breeds might look at me and think I’m needy but remember my great great great great-whatever they are, were worshipped, so I’m genetically inclined to expect the same treatment!
Not just a pretty face
As you’ve probably guessed from this incredibly well constructed article, I’m extremely intelligent and I’m not the exception, the Abyssinian Cat is a very clever cat breed which is why we like puzzle toys but be warned If you’re going to put us in an enclosure make sure it’s escape proof because if there’s a way out we’ll find it - just to show you how clever we are.
