A Guide to the Russian Blue Cat

Russian Blues are stately looking cats; they’re routine-loving, quiet kitties and you’ll only hear ‘em if they’re really hungry or annoyed. Don’t be fooled by that calm exterior, they can surprise you with lightning quick movements as they knock your wine glass to the ground.

History

This naturally occurring breed has its origins in the Arkhangelsk Isles of Russia, hence their trendy nickname, the Archangel cat. Harsh, subpolar winters led these gorgeous kitties to develop their world-famous plush coats, but fortunately they’re not overdressed for our lovely climate. Finally, some sun!

Appearance

The most striking feature of a Russian Blue Cat is their double-density coat: the plush blue undercoat from which the breed gets its name plus an outer layer of shiny, silver-tipped guard hairs that give a lustrous, silvery sheen. Their emerald green eyes stand out against a grey little head complete with two pointy ears and a tiny mouth. Fine-boned with toned muscles, these slender-bodied Russian bombshells rock those high-set shoulder blades, while their relatively tiny paws create the illusion that they’re walking on tiptoes. Oh yeah, they’re the designated feline ballerinas.

Temperament

Russian Blues are stately looking cats; they’re routine-loving, quiet kitties and you’ll only hear ‘em if they’re really hungry or annoyed. Don’t be fooled by that calm exterior, they can surprise you with lightning quick movements as they knock your wine glass to the ground. You really shouldn’t drink so much, human. These affectionate felines develop strong bonds with their parents, especially those who shower them with attention and kitty treats. But nothing hurts a Russian Blue more than neglect so when it comes to gestures of love, there’s no such thing as going overboard. They love playtime and you can even train these clever clogs to appreciate a game of fetch. They can be timid, and prefer the familiar environment of the indoors, or their spacious outdoor cat enclosure. They’re even more fussy about cleanliness than your average feline and will give you judgmental looks if you don’t take out the kitty litter.

Care

Because their short coat is dense, they’re not big shedders, though your Russian Blue just loves those weekly grooming sessions. And when that sweet-looking face looks up at you after licking the bowl clean, try and keep your cool – these kitties love to eat and are prone to piling on the pounds. If you insist on lavishing them with treats, at least look at some healthy options. Because they’re such foodies, dental care is essential: brush their teeth daily, or at least once a week. And don’t worry,  they love when being fussed over.

Suggested Names

It may be far from the motherland, but the Russian Blue shouldn’t forget where it came from. Make its name a reminder! Here are our favourites:

  • Pushkin
  • Tolstoy
  • Elena
  • Sasha
  • Romanov

Still have doubts? We’re disappointed, human, but there’s 5 reasons you’re gravely mistaken. Or, if you’re trying to figure out your Russian Blue’s mysterious body language, look no further. Find the cat that’s right for you here.
